Zum 1. Juni 2016 wurde Prof. Volker Gümmer, „Chief of CFD Methods and Aerothermal Technology“ und „Associate Fellow for Compression Systems“ bei Rolls-Royce Deutschland, auf den Lehrstuhl für Turbomaschinen und Flugantriebe der TUM berufen.

Volker Gümmer studierte von 1984-1991 Maschinenbau mit dem Schwerpunkt Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik an der TU Braunschweig. Seit 1991 war Volker Gümmer leitend in zahlreichen Triebwerksentwicklungen für die internationale Luftfahrt tätig und führte insbesondere in den Programmen V2500 Select, BR725 und TP400 entscheidende Neuerungen erfolgreich bis zum Produkt. Während dieser Zeit erwarb er 1999 den Doktor-Grad an der TU München. Seit 2000 erfand und entwickelte er innovative Lösungen im Bereich der Turbomaschinen, die eine neue Generation effizienter Antriebe vorbereiteten. In  2014 erhielt er im Konzern Rolls-Royce für seine wegweisenden Entwicklungen den Sir-Henry-Royce Innovations Award sowie den Trusted-to-Deliver-Excellence Award.

Die Forschungsschwerpunkte am Lehrstuhl befassen sich mit der aerodynamischen Optimierung von Verdichtern und Turbinen, mit der Technologieentwicklung für künftige Antriebsbläsersysteme, mit der baukonzeptbezogenen Weiterentwicklung von Gasturbinenkomponenten und -systemen sowie mit dem Einsatz neuer Wärmetauscherkonzepte in kleinen und großen Fluggasturbinen.
