The attendance of this lecture provides students with an insight into a helicopter’s design process. Participants obtain knowledge of the applicable requirements to a modern helicopter layout, along with an understanding of conflicting design objectives and underlying physical interrelations. The capability to apply practical dimensioning techniques is complemented with the evaluation of helicopter configurations regarding expectable flight performance. Furthermore, attending students are able to employ methods for cost and mass estimations of helicopter components and understand the impact of major influencing parameters. Eventually, key constructional aspects of the helicopter’s design and general architecture are highlighted.
